It’s 20 years today since Kurt Cobain killed himself. I was 5 at the time and even though his music and legacy greatly inspired and influenced me growing up… I can’t say his death had much of an impact on me.
Last week however, I heard that a guy from my home town, Liam Pease-Smith killed himself. It happened back in May 2013 but we weren’t friends as such - I knew him because we were both quite involved with the local music scene.
The times that my band gigged with Liam, he played solo and it was a pretty unique experience. He sat cross-legged on the stage, playing a keyboard with light-up keys, shouting and singing incredibly weird and seemingly nonsensical lyrics.
He wasn’t really a good singer and he slurred a lot of his words, but he was incredibly captivating and confident. I found his take on the world, positivity for music and nonchalance greatly inspiring.
I found out he’d had severe mental health issues towards the end and it makes me incredibly sad that he didn’t get the help he needed.
I wish everybody felt comfortable talking about their mental health and that there wasn’t any stigma attached to mental illness, it’s a change I really want to see in the world.
I’ll always remember you Liam Pease-Smith and I’m grateful for the inspiration and confidence you gave me.
